This option allows Minnesota child welfare (CW) agencies to host their own Motivational Interviewing (MI) training with a certified MINT trainer, along with completion of the Academy’s Skills Demonstration course. DHS anticipates further funding opportunities will be made available for agencies to utilize to support training, in addition to existing FFPSA allocation and Opioid Allocation funding. To support successful certification, it's recommended that agencies work with a MINT trainer to ensure the curriculum is aligned with child welfare including values and practical examples.

Learners will then need to complete both of the sections of CWTA X410 listed below:

STEP 1: MI SKILLS FOR CW PROFESSIONALS: PATHWAY 3 SEC 1A. TRAINING DOCUMENTATION APPROVAL (CWTA X410)

  • Complete a Training Documentation Google form located within the training portal under CWTA X410.
  • Upload electronic documentation of completing your agency-led MI training by a certified MINT trainer with a minimum of 15 hours of training.
  • Training Academy staff will review and grade your submissions. Once marked as complete, you will submit a final attestation quiz and can register for the Pathway 3 Skills Demonstration course [MI SKILLS FOR CW PROFESSIONALS: PATHWAY 3 SEC 1B. SKILLS DEMONSTRATION (CWTA X410)].

STEP 2: MI SKILLS FOR CW PROFESSIONALS: PATHWAY 3 SEC 1B. SKILLS DEMONSTRATION (CWTA X410)

  • Once your agency MI training has been approved through CWTA X410 Sec 1A, you will need to successfully complete the Training Academy’s MI Skills Demonstration.

What can agencies expect?

  • Ongoing support by the Training Academy to ensure agencies are meeting pathway requirements to successfully prepare for the MNCWTA skills demonstration.
  • Upon completion of any MI pathway, learners will receive an email from DHS Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) about regular Fidelity Monitoring, which is a requirement under the Family First Prevention Services Act (FFPSA) policy.

Process Steps:

  • Agency director, professional development staff, manager, or other administrator completes the MI Pathway 3 Pre-Training Certification Form providing the requested information.
    • You will be asked to provide agency information, MINT trainer information, and proposed training content and length. You may need to connect with your MINT trainer to get some information.
    • The Pre-Training Certification Form is used to document training plans that include hosting a MINT trainer and MI training curriculum with a minimum of 15 hours of training that provides applied practice of basic MI skills. Completing the Pre-Training Certification Form helps to ensure that there is agreement between agencies and the MNCWTA that the proposed training meets established criteria prior to training, and agencies can feel confident they are hosting an appropriate training.
  • MNCWTA staff will review the form submission and provide confirmation that the training meets criteria or provide feedback regarding any issues or needed clarification.
  • After completion of the training, learners will complete the Skills Demonstration Assessment through the Academy’s training portal.
    • If learners do not already have a training portal profile, they will need to create that on the MNCWTA website.
  • Upon successful completion of the MI skills demonstration, learners will complete a course attestation.
  • Learners will show successful completion of MI Pathway #3 in their training record.
